Francesco Landini: “At the Source of Song”

The aim of this project was to carry out research on medieval music.

The participating musicians, approaching the project with their experiences in contemporary music, were surprised by the complexity of aesthetic thought and unsettling richness of sound and rhythm which they encountered, uncovering a gigantic reservoir of masterpieces, some of which had remained unplayed for almost 700 years.

After two years of decoding and organological reconstruction, a few of the “avant-garde” ballads composed by Francesco Landini in the second half of the 14th Century were officially baptised as “ARS NOVA”.
